Artist Statement:
Washing is a body centered project that explores the quite literal envelopment and consumption of whiteness. In this video project, the subject (myself), goes through several methods of ‘cleansing’. She consumes and bathes in bleach, a well known whitening chemical, and covers herself in white paint methodically. The subject enacts these tasks as if they were mundane rituals of the everyday, with a resigned emotional connection to the process. The subject of Washing is informed by her mission to cover and be covered. Washing seeks to explore the immersion of the white body of paint onto the black body, the whitening chemicals onto melanated pigmentation and the internalized differences that reside inside of the subject. Washing also seeks to explore the absorption of whiteness, the scrapping off of a shallow layer, the incomplete, the unsatisfied and the unattainable.
